The rising cost of fuel globally is a matter of concern in automobile industry. The problem is more grave for truckers who need to haul huge loads to far away places over rugged terrains and in inclement weather conditions.
If that be the case, there is a need to identify ways and means of achieving better mileage in trucks thus, saving on gas/fuel. Consequently, turn around time would reduce and more number of trips could be undertaken to far off places. Such trucks are being called as Smart Trucks.
Engine Vs Mileage
Engine efficiency is directly related to mileage. If the engine consumes more fuel, mileage would be reduced. Alternatively, a fuel efficient engine will run smoothly to enhance mileage. The truck load also affects the mileage since more, load means engine needs more pulling power and thus, more fuel consumption. This problem needs to be addressed.
The Solution
Mileage can be increase in two ways. Either by intelligent technology implanted in a truck or by strictly adhering to Do’s and Don’ts listed out in the manual. The end result of all efforts is saving on fuel consumption and increasing mileage.
The Vacuum Gauge
It is a gadget which uses mercury to diagnose engine problems so that they can be rectified after necessary repairs in order to ensure that the engine is optimized for fuels consumption which directly affects mileage. This gauge is installed on an intake passage and reads pressures in terms of psig. It can be used to identify following problems:-
- Leaking Valves.
- Worn Out Valve Guides.
- Worn Out Piston Rings.
- Exaust Obstructions. Incorrect Valve Timings
- Vacuum leaks.
Once the problem is identified, it is immediately rectified.
Smart Switches
Most Smart Trucks have one or two switches in the cabin meant for various types of loads, inclines/gradients and surface of the road (pebbles, sand and so on). Three switches in the newly launched Mahindra & Mahindra Blazo are as follow:
- Turbo
- Heavy
- Light
Strict Driver Practices
A good knowledge about the truck and correct practices being followed by a driver can go a long way in increasing mileage in trucks. A Smart Driver can make a Truck Smart by his disciplined approach. Here are some of the Dp’s for a good driver:-
- Ensure regular servicing of truck.
- Use good quality tyres.
- Use Top covers if carrying load- reduces drag.
- Ensure Air filter is always clean.
- Use cruise controls on highway.
With Smart switches and added technological innovations, One would be able to Notice only Smart Trucks on the roads. More mileage globally means global saving of fuel.
Happy Trucking with Smart trucks.
