If you spend your day flipping between Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint — and let’s be honest, who doesn’t — Anthropic just gave you a reason to stop copy-pasting context into a chat window.
Claude is now inside all four Microsoft 365 apps. Not as a browser tab you switch to. As a sidebar that knows what you’re working on.
Here’s what changed, why it matters, and how to set it up.
One Conversation, Four Apps
The headline feature isn’t that Claude works inside Office apps — that’s been true for Outlook since beta. What’s new is shared context across apps. You can triage an email in Outlook, open the brief in Word, build a model in Excel, and turn it into a PowerPoint deck — all without re-explaining your context to Claude.
Adjust a number in Excel, and the chart in PowerPoint and the figure in your Word memo update automatically. Conversations persist per file, so you can close the sidebar, come back tomorrow, and pick up where you left off.
What You Can Actually Do With It
📊 In Excel
This is where the integration delivers the most value. You can describe what you want in plain language and Claude writes the formula. Instead of Googling XLOOKUP syntax or wrestling with nested IFs, you just say:
- “Write a formula that looks up column A against the table in Sheet2 and returns column C”
- “Flag any row where column D is 20% higher than column E”
- “Explain what
=SUMPRODUCT((B2:B100="West")*(C2:C100>500)*D2:D100)does”
Claude can also analyze data, spot trends, and guide you through chart selection — all without leaving the spreadsheet.
📝 In Word
The Word sidebar reads your document and acts as a writing partner with context. You can highlight a section and ask Claude to expand, tighten, or rewrite it in a different tone. Because it knows the rest of the doc, revisions stay consistent.
Useful prompts: “Expand this paragraph with two supporting points”, “Rewrite this for a non-technical audience”, “Is the argument in section 3 logically consistent?”
Claude also supports tracked changes and comment threads, so edits are reviewable.
📧 In Outlook
Outlook sees the most immediate time savings. Claude can triage your entire inbox — sorting messages by what needs your response, what it can draft for you, and what’s noise. Replies land as drafts in Outlook’s compose pane with recipients, subject, and body filled in. You review everything before it goes out.
Calendar invites? Claude checks attendee availability and opens the event form in Outlook’s native UI.
📽️ In PowerPoint
Claude builds slides in your existing template, edits what you’ve selected, and generates native charts and diagrams. No more copying charts from Excel and pasting them as uneditable images.
Cross-App Workflows That Actually Save Time
The real magic is when you chain these together. Here are a few workflows teams are already running:
- Email to deliverable: Triage email in Outlook, open the attached brief in Word, build the supporting analysis in Excel, turn everything into a PowerPoint deck, and draft the review invite — all in one flowing session.
- Clear your inbox before a meeting: Ask Claude what needs attention, get replies drafted for quick wins, open the brief from your inbox, and the context comes with it into Word.
- Build a model from a brief: Ask Claude to build the model behind your Word document. It opens Excel, pulls the numbers from the doc, and builds real formulas across multiple tabs.
- Draft in your template: Point Claude at a brief, a dataset, or a thread. It drafts sections in your heading styles, populates tables in place, and keeps numbering intact.
Setting It Up
Installation takes about five minutes:
- Open any Microsoft 365 app — Word, Excel, Outlook, or PowerPoint
- Go to Insert → Add-ins (desktop) or the Add-ins icon in the toolbar
- Search for “Claude” in the Office Add-ins marketplace
- Click Add and accept the permissions prompt
Once installed, the add-in persists across all supported apps. Sign in with your Anthropic account (you’ll need a Claude for Work plan — Team or above).
Enterprise admins can deploy both listings (Excel/Word/PowerPoint and Outlook) from the Microsoft admin center. OpenTelemetry support lets security teams monitor prompts, tool calls, and document references.
The Bottom Line
The Claude M365 integration isn’t just another AI assistant that sits in a sidebar and waits for you to paste things into it. The cross-app context is the differentiator. When your workflow spans four applications and your AI assistant follows you across all of them without losing the thread, the friction of switching contexts disappears.
For Excel power users who don’t speak formula, Outlook warriors drowning in threads, and anyone who’s ever rebuilt a slide deck because the numbers changed — this is worth the install.
Claude for Excel, PowerPoint, and Word is generally available now. Claude for Outlook is in public beta. Both require a paid Claude plan (Team, Enterprise, or Max).
