Shopify just changed how online stores get built. On October 1, 2026, the company introduced Canvas — a new design surface where you build and customize your store by simply talking to Sidekick, Shopify’s AI agent. And you watch every change it makes land in real time.
The pitch is bold: no design experience, no coding skills, no big budget — anyone can create a fully custom store in about twenty minutes.
What is Shopify Canvas?
Canvas is a workspace shared between you and Sidekick. Instead of clicking through settings panels and menus, you describe what you want in a chat field — and Sidekick writes the actual code, right in front of you.
The key difference from the old theme editor? Canvas shows you the whole store at once. You can see every page laid out side by side, pan across them to judge how the store feels as a whole, then zoom in to tweak individual details.
And it’s not a static mockup. Canvas renders the real code behind your store, so you get full interactivity, animations, and the ability to preview pages with different products, collections, and screen sizes before anything goes live.
How the AI actually works
Sidekick isn’t new — it’s been writing code for a while. Shopify says Sidekick made over 25 million theme edits in the first half of 2026 alone. But building an entire store from scratch is a much bigger job, so Shopify had to upgrade how the agent works.
Now Sidekick:
- Works directly on a theme’s files, not just individual sections
- Asks questions, proposes approaches, and takes your feedback along the way
- Remembers your preferences and carries earlier decisions into later work
- Takes screenshots of its own work to inspect the result — the same way you do
Austin Knight, a design director at Shopify, put it well: getting Sidekick to write code was the easy part. Guiding it toward good design decisions took real effort. Every theme now carries a “design contract” — a library of curated patterns and evaluation data — that shapes the design directions Sidekick brings to you.
The 20-minute store claim
Shopify’s director of product Ben Sehl knows the pain firsthand. “When I built Kotn 12 years ago, I knew how to code and it still took me two weeks to get a rough store working,” he said. With Canvas, he claims a merchant can build a fully custom store in twenty minutes.
Even if real-world builds take longer, the direction is clear: the barrier between having an idea and having a live store is collapsing.
The catch: Canvas has real limitations
Canvas isn’t for everyone yet. Shopify’s own requirements page lists firm restrictions:
- Desktop only — you can’t use it on mobile or tablet
- Only on plans with theme customization — downgrade your plan and you can view but not edit
- No third-party themes — Canvas works only with Shopify-built themes and custom themes
- Staff need “edit code” permission to even open it
There are workflow quirks too. A theme edited in Canvas stops receiving theme updates, and its files can’t be downloaded. You can’t translate content inside Canvas, can’t add app blocks or embeds, and new blocks must be requested from Sidekick rather than added manually.
Changes save automatically but only reach customers after you publish. Creating a theme starts a Sidekick conversation about your brand, and the result lands in your theme library as an unpublished theme.
What this means for merchants
For small businesses and solo founders, Canvas removes the biggest roadblock to a professional-looking store: technical skill. For developers and agencies, it’s a faster way to prototype and ship custom work.
The trade-off right now is flexibility. If you rely on a third-party theme or heavy app integrations, Canvas isn’t ready for you yet. But for everyone else, it’s one of the most interesting AI product launches of the year.
Shopify says Canvas is rolling out to merchants over the coming days. If you don’t see it yet, keep an eye on your Themes page in the admin. You can read the full announcement and dig into the details on Shopify’s Canvas documentation, or check out TechCrunch’s coverage.
